Synopsis

Élise, a documentary filmmaker, finds herself shipwrecked on a remote island composed entirely of waste, situated in the vast expanse of the North Pacific. Still grappling with the recent loss of her mother, Élise is in desperate search of assistance when she encounters the enigmatic Roi Poubelle. As the island's only inhabitant and self-declared sovereign, he repurposes the debris that lands on his shores, breathing new life into the discarded materials. Initially unaccustomed to human interaction, he views Élise as merely another item of trash to be sorted. However, as time progresses, an unexpected friendship blooms between them, unveiling shared interests and passions.

Artistic Director’s Notes

Karine Ricard

Eudes Laroche Francoeur has been working with us at TfT for several years. He began by teaching Saturday drama classes for children, even before the pandemic, and performed in Les Zinspiré.e.s : L’âge de raison. He then went on to create and perform Les Contes du Voyageur, a one-man touring show. When I took over TfT’s Artistic Direction, I only knew Eudes by reputation. When he proposed Le Roi poubelle, a text still in development at the time, I was immediately captivated by the author’s imagination, his musical talent and the fantasy of his story. I was convinced that his creation should be presented on the TfT stage. After years of workshops, and thanks to a solid artistic team led by Pier Rodier of Vox Théâtre, this talented artist’s show is finally on stage. I wish you all a wonderful adventure.

Author’s Notes

Eudes Laroche-Francoeur

The road to Roi Poubelle began several years ago. In my spare time, I’d started making musical instruments from salvaged and recycled objects. They were rather rudimentary at first, but I soon saw their musical, visual and narrative potential. All that remained was to find a dramatic structure to bring them to life.

One day, I stumbled upon the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This is a veritable phenomenon in which plastics discarded in the Pacific Ocean gather to make floating islands due to ocean currents. This event struck a chord in my imagination. Who lives on these islets? What do they look like? What goes on there? Both ideas of an island of garbage and musical instruments made from recycled objects organically came together. These are the foundations of the play Le Roi Poubelle.
